Currently we at the port of LA/LB service the U. S. and a big part of the consumer buying power is done on credit. How is it that cargo volume is going to increase four-fold? Is the population of the U. S. going to quadruple?
I think they are trying to allay the sheep to sleep as they get herded into the future without a proactive plan. They lull them (the membership masses) to sleep with a mixture of half-truths and non-commitments.
When I talked to the PhD who is spearheading this project with questions about the agenda, he said it was already set but the basic premise is that we want to show the employer that we are good citizens and good workers and to beseech them to take us good workers/citizens into the future with them when they automate many of us out of existence.
I told him, the question remains, how or what to do with us in the absence of a job - consequences of the information age? Why will the employer keep us on the payroll when it is a savvy business decision (like all businesses do) to lay people off when they are not needed?
He said yes, that is the million dollar question that we are still looking for answers. So I gave him a copy of a couple of essays I wrote and will get him a copy of the booklet I wrote called 21st Century ILWU. My booklet sold out at the ILWU convention in Hawaii in 1997.
