While I tend to agree with most everything that Mr. Smith says concerning on how other countries are in relation to China in admissions to the WTO that still doesnt change the fact that the first step in disabling the WTO is to stop the admission of China. The WTO cannot be changed. The system that the WTO has adopted will not allow for change. It rules by secret unelected committee, come to think of it so does China. And I also have a problem with any trade with China at this time. The people of the world, regardless of the country they happen to live in have a right to not only life, but a decent and healthful way of life, education for their children, free from tyranny and war or the threat of it.
The unions in China that Smith talks about in his article amount to what we term a company union here. They are not autonomous Unions, they are government unions. China is run by the party and the army. And all export trade is if not run by the army it is overseen by the army. Which spells danger in anyones book.
While Mr. Smith gives us a great history lesson (and he is factual as far as my limited abilities can tell) the article doesnt touch on how China is today in real terms as far as the average worker lives and exists. Workers from all over the world have a lot to fear of China. Your average worker is just so much fodder for the political aims of the Chinese Government. Yes I know that is the way it is even in this country to a certain extent but one cannot equate China and its policies with any other country in the world at this time. What other country speeds up or slows down executions of it own citizens to make a profit off their body parts.
As for the AFL-CIO, I saw their commercial on CNN this evening. While Mr. Smith might have umbrage with the messengers, the message was in and of it self was true. Because the PRC itself acts like unrestrained corporate power. And it has nothing what so ever to do China being communist to me. I am not a fan of those he speeks about either. For the same reasons and others. But the whole thing has to do with the meltdown of workers rights everywhere. And the futher erosion by the WTO of the plight of workers and the enviroment. And the admission of China to the WTO is a major step in the desruction of both.
China has no concern for fair and equal trade, it wants trade on its terms only. Just like with everything else that it has an interest in. If you think that it considers its has a vested interest in its own people consider this. Its rural projects are causing a flood of people to the cities. Result- overcrowding, underpaid workers, food shortages, infant health problems on the increase. Nationwide religious extermination. Cultural diversity in Tibet and western China (with a large Moslem population) crushed to the point of non-exsistance. The largest percenage of GPN spent on the military in the world.
So Mr. Smith I guess you can include me in your China Syndrome Conspiracy.
