Durban: Shots Fired at SEIU Gen. Sec.

29 May 2000

There was an attempt on the life of Oscar Dlamini, General Secretary of the Service Employees Industrial Union last Thursday 25 May. Oscar was on his way to Umlazi township in Durban waiting outside the Dunlop plant for a taxi, when a grey BMW pulled up near him and the passenger fired shots at him. The two occupants of the car then physically attacked him and tried to force him into the car. Fortunately for Oscar a passing taxi driver shot at his assailants and then gave him a lift from the area. He suffered a twisted ankle during the struggle.

This attack came within days of the Privest company’s contract to supply labour to the Durban docks coming to an end. The Union is fighting for a worker controlled pool and for the work in the harbour to be shared.

We have already lost a comrade Vusi Mbeje and continue to appeal for support:
