Re: The President’s Presence

Lewis Wright asks,

where was President McWilliams when the candidates presented themselves to the memberships of Locals 13 and 63?

It is unconscionable for the leader of a democratic union not to present himself to the rank and file.

Lewis, wouldn’t it be fair to wait for an answer to your question before making that “unconscionable” judgment? To find out some facts first?

One fact you left out is that he also didn’t “present” himself at Local 34. Mentioning that would have strengthened your case a little bit. I don’t think he was at Local 10 either, so add a little more gasoline to your flames of outrage.

’Course, you might want to expand your research into Spinosa’s appearances, just to be, well, fair. You know, use the same standard for everyone. If you did that, you would learn that Spinosa went to Local 10, but skipped Local 34. The other candidates who went to 10, also went to 34. Go figure.

I was a little disappointed that Spinosa left my local off his itinerary, but calling it “unconscionable” wouldn’t have occurred to me. I just figured he calculated the number of votes he might harvest, and correctly reached the conclusion that the result would be low, if not in the negative numbers. That would be to his credit as a politician to use his time wisely.

McEllrath also didn’t show, and neither did Ortiz. That did not surprise me, because last time they paid a campaign visit, they were trashing McWilliams over the “lifetime benefits” issue. They might not have wanted to explain why they weren’t able to do what they promised they would do, and what’s more, they might not have wanted to explain what they think they should do about it now, and how if they did what they promised they would do, it could cost us more than you or I could imagine.

I suggest that you do some research, Lewis. Go find out what these “leaders” were saying at the Portland Caucus. It should be available in the hall. Nothing I could say could make them look dumber and more clueless, than the words out of their own mouths. Better find out now, learn about what we’re dealing with, before this crew messes everything up.

Brian Nelson, Local 34

You say it is “unconscionable” for McWilliams not to appear at Locals 13 and 63. Is it any more unconscionable that he didn’t go to Local 34, his home local? Or is it only not going to 13 and 63 that deserves condemnation?
