Germans receive a standard six weeks paid vacation after the first year of work for a given employer.

Marc Gunther, I wish you were right about our vacation in Sweden. But you are not. In fact the Vacation Law stipulates only five weeks. That is the minimum for everyone. On top of that some get more vacation, but that depends on the contract (obtained through collective bargaining) and not legislation.

I myself work as a reporter for a periodical published by the National Board for Occupational Safety and Health. As a white collar state employee, I get seven weeks vacation from my contract.

Those extra weeks are, I guess, more common among white collar than blue collar workers. That is, the more vacation you need the less you get.

Just for your information: Copenhagen dockers will in two years have 6 weeks paid vacation and we have a 37 hours workweek.
