(This motion was adopted at the ILWU Local 10 membership meeting 19 Oct 2000)
WHEREAS, the international shipping company Nordana in cahoots with the anti-labor government of South Carolina and the non-union stevedore company, Winyah Stevedoring (now called WSI) failed in their union-busting attempt in the port of Charleston; and
WHEREAS, ILA longshore Local 1422 and ILA checkers Local 1771 have through militant action secured standard labor agreements for their locals thereby leading the way in organized laboršs struggle against attacks from international shipowners and stevedoring companies; and
WHEREAS a vindictive legal suit by the non-union WSI Stevedoring outfit against ILA Locals 1422 and 1771 and 27 longshoremen, is attempting to undermine a solid labor victory;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT ILWU Local 10, when requested by ILA Local 1422, will inititate an International Day of Solidarity with the Charleston Longshore Workers, to demand that all charges against the defendants be dropped and we call on longshore and clerk locals on the West Coast, the East and Gulf Coasts and around the world to participate in this day of action;
AND BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED THAT we call on the ITF (International Transport Workers Federation) and the IDC (International Dockworkers Council) to help coordinate this International Day of Solidarity.
