At the meeting last night of the Northern California Labor Committee in Defense of the Charleston Longshore Workers it was reported that participating in the Columbia rally will be at least 4 members of Ship Clerks Local 34, 14 members of Local 10, possibly 1 from Local 6 and 3 members of the Defense Committee, including a video cameraman and 2 lawyers.
We will be carrying two banners, one that says,“An Injury to One is an Injury to All” and “Defend the Charleston Longshore 5”. All ILWU locals and other unions are encouraged to post information on their delegations.
No trial date has been set yet. The mobilization for workers’ rights will be demanding the bogus charges be dropped by the government of South Carolina. For the first time rank-and-file longshore workers on the Pacific, Atlantic and Gulf Coasts will be acting together in defense of basic trade union rights. We need to send a strong protest message by organizing solidarity actions in all ports on the first day of the trial. Let the ships sit idle!

So far Local 10 is subsidizing 12 members to go to the June 9th rally in Columbia, South Carolina, including 10 members of our Drill Team. Other members, possibly 4-6 more may be going as well. It’s a good idea for each local to post how many members they have going and also to send that information to Steve Stallone who’s coordinating Charleston 5 defense efforts for International President Jim Spinosa. ILWU members should bring their local’s banner and wear their union jackets and white West Coast stetson. The Northern California Labor Committee in Defense of the Charleston Longshore Workers is meeting tonight. I’ll post any new information. This is a historic step forward for the longshore unions in this country. We’re anticipating a big turnout.

Hello everyone, I was just wondering how many locals are sending delegates to the Rally for the Charleston Five on June 9th? We have 6 going from Tacoma. Just trying to get an Idea of how many of us are going. Please respond, I keep getting asked from our members If I know how many are going from the ILWU.
