To those of you going to Columbia, SC, have a great demo, and a safe and pleasant trip. It’s inspiring to see the support that this struggle is generating. The New York labor council is sending buses, as well as Atlanta locals of UNITE and Teamsters (10 buses).
I like the comments by South Carolina AFL-CIO President Donna DeWitt, about the Charleston Longshore Local,“ILA Local 1422 is an example of what the labor movement is about. I’ve seen them load up a bus, travel for three-and-a-half hours to support workers, cook them meals and encourage them to stand their ground. They’ve paid out of their own pocket for low-paid women and minorities to attend union training.” (Socialist Worker newspaper, 6/8/01). This type of activity, among others, is what scares the hell out of scum like South Carolina Attorney general Condom and his ilk.
