A weeklong celebration marking the birthday of legendary labor leader, Harry Bridges is planned July 23-29 highlighted by a parade over the LA harbors most impressive landmark. Everyone is invited to participate in a march over the Vincent Thomas Bridge on Saturday, July 28 marking the 100th birthday of the founder of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), Harry Bridges. The route begins on Terminal Island and ends in San Pedro.
Bridges was renowned for his toughness and honesty as well as his visionary outlook, which lead the labor movement in achieving such things as disability, medical and dental care and union controlled hiring. He was one of a handful of labor leaders who embraced internationalism and demonstrated solidarity with workers in other countries through action by the union. It is fitting that the event will be attended by international dockworkers from as far away as Japan and Korea, Argentia and England twenty different countries.
There will also be a vintage and exotic motor tour as part of the parade and on display afterwards. Entertainment, food and arts & crafts will be part of the birthday celebration featuring free birthday cake and hot dogs. Other food will be available for purchase. The parade begins at 10 am from Terminal Island with shuttle service provided from the parking lots under the bridge on the San Pedro side and from the Federal Building parking lot on Ferry Street on Terminal Island.
Events leading up to the parade and party include a historical exhibit at the LA Maritime Museum, an LA Harbor Art Walk, a play and award presentation at the Warner Grand Theatre about the life of Harry Bridges, boat tours and history walks. On Sunday, July 29 the Lane Victory will take a one-day cruise with guests aboard.
The weeklong celebration is co-sponsored by the ILWU and the Harry Bridges Institute. For more information on the parade or other events call the Harry Bridges Institute at (310) 831-2397 or email us at HarryBridges2001@aol.com
