IDC Statement on European Port Action

IDC
23 Sep 2001

The IDC European Zone met in Marseille, France, on the 22nd and 23rd of September 2001.

The debate has fully confirmed the total discord with the Commission’s European Directive draft proposals aiming to deregulate all the port services.

During the last few months, the IDC has multiplied its interventions on a European level, Parliament and Transport Commission, to affirm its opposition to the project. By doing so, the IDC has made the demonstration of its representativity and its efficiency. The IDC considers that the report made by M. Jarzembowski confirms in a judicious way the incoherences of the Directive Project. An analysis which we share.

Concerning the call by the ITF for an action on the 25th of September 2001, the IDC regrets the absence of concertation that could have led to a common action and the efficient association of the IDC on that day. However, the IDC leaves to it’s members total liberty to participate or not to this action.

The IDC pronounces itself in favour of an action of the dockworkers in all the European ports against the Directive but to truly fight against the Directive, an action the largest as possible is essential. Therefore, the IDC pronounces itself in favour of an action of all the European Dockers at the end of October or beginning of November due to the meeting of the Transport Commission on the 10th of October which will produce the official project of the European Directive which will be presented to the European Parliament.

It declares itself disposed to meet the ITF rapidly in order to make this meeting a large success.

Moreover, the participants at the meeting of the IDC European Zone reaffirm their pledges of solidarity with the struggle of the Charleston Dockers.
