On January of 2000, 100 members of the International Longshoremens Association in Charleston, South Carolina were picketing a non-union ship from the Nordana corporation. In an effort to bust the union, the Democrat turned Republican attorney general Tom Condon mobilized over 600 police with dogs, armoured cars, helicopters, sharpshooters and horses to attack the picket line. Condon has led the fight to keep the confederate flag flying and is an officer in the ghost confederate army. This brutal attack on the mostly Black longshoremen was followed up with 5 of them being charged with felonies that could cost them 5 years in jail. The union and the individuals were also sued by the scab companies. Their trial is now scheduled for November 14 and dockers around the world are preparing for an international strike to protest this union busting racist attack. This struggle is not just about the Charleston dockers but democratic rights for all working people as well as the rights of millions of southern workers to have a union. This 13 minute video is the story of their struggle. The Bay Areas Charleston Defense Committee is meeting Thursday Oct. 25, 7PM at Local 10 to organize a rally for Nov. 14 at the newly-named Harry Bridges Plaza on the San Francisco waterfront where The Big Strike began in 34. Now more than ever unions need to pull together and defend labors right to picket and to protest whether on the street or on the docks. ILWU has been supporting the Charleston longshoremen for nearly 2 years now. ALL LOCALS voted to support them financially and through an international day of action on the first day of the trial. The vote of ILWUs rank and file must prevail! Dont work on Nov. 14. Its not only your right. Its your obligation as an ILWU longshore worker. Dont let the Charleston 5 down when it counts most on their trial date!
DEFEND THE CHARLESTON 5! DEFEND LABORS RIGHTS! AN INJURY TO ONE IS AN INJURY TO ALL!
