The AFL-CIO and the Charleston 5 defense committees are calling on all workers and those concerned with social justice to take a stand and protest November 14, 2001 to free the Charleston 5.
The union dockworkers known as the Charleston 5, were charged with inciting to riot following a January 20, 2000, protest. When 150 longshore workers, members of the predominantly black ILA local 1422 and its fraternal Local 1771, picketed the loss of their jobs to a non-union stevedore company to unload a Danish freighter, they were attacked by 600 riot police in the port of Charleston, South Carolina. The unions and its members have been fined $1. 5 million dollars and 5 members placed under apartheid-like house arrest and face 5 years in jail.
Rightwing Republican State Attorney General Condon has been removed from the case. And although a local judge has just released the Charleston 5 from house arrest on October 15th, they still face long prison terms. The Charleston 5 trial is scheduled to begin the week of November 12th. If you agree that the defense of workers rights, civil rights and civil liberties is important, especially now, join us for this National Day of Solidarity to free the Charleston 5!
