Another blockade in Buenos Aires. Today, 14 December, dockworkers in the main Buenos Aires terminals are blockading the entrances to the port in protest against the constant harassment they receive from the British multinational P&O Ports. The situation of Dardo Viani, who was dismissed from the port due to his trade union activities, is a symptom of the Argentinean workers serious situation. The dockworkers are members of SUTAP and have the support of the International Dockworkers Council (IDC).
The series of blockades has been a constant feature in the serious dispute between workers in Buenos Aires and the British-owned multinational P&O Ports. The company, which is expanding heavily in Argentina, controls the main port terminals - TPA and TRA - and has used a policy of systematic harassment of the SUTAP trade union, shown by its refusal to reinstate Dardo Viani, an issue which has become a symbol of the workers struggle.
SUTAP has repeatedly insisted on the need for the Argentinean government to intervene in this issue. However, the attitude of the General Ports Administration (AGP) has been suspiciously ambiguous in this matter, as by its actions it has tolerated P&Os policies towards its workers. The latest meetings have made it clear that the workers are not willing to give up, and that they will only accept a solution which includes Vianis reinstatement and an end to worker harassment. The IDC, which has two delegates in the port, has also given its support to actions by the Argentinean dockworkers and has reiterated that respect for workers and their organisations is fundamental in constructing a solid and growing economy.
