Protest to Governor Alencar

2nd October 1996

Dear Governor Alencar,

I write to express concern regarding our fellow trade unionists in Volta Redonda SFPMVR. The use of military police in industrial matters is a gross violation of human rights. Charges against Brother Ribeiro are an affront to natural justice and I appeal to you to accept the natural laws of any democratic society.

Our Members of Parliament have been informed and we have expressed our specific disgust. All charges must be dropped against Brothers Geraldo Ribeiro and Marcello Carega.

Yours sincerely,

J. Nolan
Chairman Mersey Port Shop Stewards Committee

Solidarity message to Geraldo Ribeiro

2 October 1996

To: Geraldo Ribeiro

Dear Brother,

I write on behalf of 500 sacked Liverpool dockworkers and their families. In September 1995, they were sacked for refusing to cross a picket line of young dockers sacked by their employer.

Last month, we had a demonstration outside Liverpool docks. Riot police and dogs were used to violate and disperse dockers and their supporters. Many of our dockers and supporters occupied gantry cranes and the roof of the main company building.

We condemn the actions against SFPMVR trade unionists and the fundamental breaches of human rights taken throughout the world.

Victory to our sisters and brothers of Brazil.

I will personally inform workers in this country of your struggle.

yours fraternally,
J. Nolan
