It is time trade unions stopped complaining about the effects of globalisation and instead made sure that they are effectively organised internationally to secure the best deal for their members, ITF General Secretary David Cockroft told a gathering of labour movement leaders and activists in Denmark on 31 May and 1 June.
"We will never organise real global solidarity with our present resources, our present working methods, or with the present attitude to international work which we encounter amongst many of our affiliated unions," Cockroft told the Global Labour Summit in Copenhagen organised by the ITF-affiliated SiD Danish transport and general workers union.
Unions also had to harness the enthusiasm which existed among rank and file trade unionists for international contacts and solidarity, combining modern communication methods like the Internet with existing international networks.
