Steward Targetted in Fresh Arrests

Four more sacked dockers were lifted by Port Police on the public highway near the Gladstone gate on Wednesday 25 June.

On Tuesday, shop steward Terry Teague met with Merseyside Police as part of ongoing liaison with the authorities. The Chief Superintendant and Chief Inspector from Crosby Division agreed that before any arrests a clear warning would be issued by a senior police officer.

Whilst discussing the dockers ongoing demo with a Port Police Inspector on Wednesday, Teague was handcuffed by two of his officers. He was taken through the picket line to the Port Police HQ inside the dock estate and held for 2 hours.

Dockers Mick Cullen, Colin Mitchell, and Ian Brittles (Nelson Freight) were arrested after Teague was singled out.

Charged with obstructing the public highway, their bail conditions forbid presence within 25 feet of Mersey Docks property. Conditions imposed after previous arrests by Merseyside Police have carried a 400 yard ban.

A total of 13 dockers including 3 stewards, 2 of whom were delegated for police liaison, have been arrested in recent weeks. Merseyside Port Shop Stewards are now reconsidering their police liaison policy.

Picket line morale remains high as the Seaforth, Alex, and Gladstone gates were blockaded shut for 45 minutes on Thursday morning.
