Lloyds List report South African boycott in support of Liverpool

Lloyd's List has featured the South African dockers solidarity boycott of Liverpool and Sheerness trade in a front page article (14 August). TGWU vice president Marvin Mfundisi told the paper that 10,000 dockworkers would be involved and the union would seek to bring other port unions on board. Mfundisi also threatened direct action against Outspan if the company did not "do something" about their marketing arm Capespan's 20 year contract with Sheerness. "We might take action against Outspan if there is no development in favour of our Liverpool brothers."

Outspan managing director John Stanbury told Lloyds List that Maputo (Mozambique) could pick up business from the boycott. Capespan managing director Louis Kriel stated: "We have never used Liverpool and we do not see why South African ports should be brought into this when it is not being supported in British ports."

Mersey Docks and Harbour Company declined to comment.
