Mumia: Congressional Commendation for ILWU

April 13, 1999

Congress of the United States
House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515-0509

President Lawrence Thibeaux
International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 10
400 North Point Street
San Francisco, CA 94133

Dear President Thibeaux:

I want to commend you and your union, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, for taking action to save the life of Pennsylvania death row prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal. The ILWU’s action to hold stop-work meetings on the West Coast on April 24th to demand a stop to Mr. Jamal’s execution and his freedom is an inspiration to all progressive-minded people, as was your contribution to the anti-apartheid struggle.

I know that several Labor Councils in the Bay Area are following your lead and are participating in the April 24th Mobilization in San Francisco.

Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend the rally because of pressing matters here in Washington. However, I wish to extend to you and all of organized labor my heartiest greetings of solidarity. Your action is an important step forward in the movement to achieve justice for Mr. Jamal.

Sincerely,

Barbara Lee
Member of Congress
