Are we working as a team?

Let me start off by asking a question first: Are we as longshoremen & crane operators up and down the coast doing what we here in San Francisco are doing: 12 to 15 moves an hour? All of our people are following the safety code and working safe.

Now having asked that question and not knowing what the answer is let me tell you a little of what has been also going on here in my port (San Francisco)

We on the day side working at Sea/Land had a ship on Friday last. We were doing as instructed working very safe, we were doing about 10 to 18 moves an hour when we left at the end of our shift we knew that there was going to be night shifts starting at 7:00 PM with at least two cranes maybe three. When we left we knew that there was only 70 moves per crane and the ship would be finished and would sail.

Here is the part that I have a problem with. The night side started at 7:00 PM and were finished by 10:30 that same night. That is 20 moves an hour. They had at least two cranes working that night with about the same total moves per crane “70 each.”

Now I know that there isn’t much difference between 18 & 20 but on the day side we were going 10 to about 18 (we had three cranes working). My point being that I call what they did “RIPEN AND ROARING.”

I know that there were over ships working on the nights side in our port also that do the same thing, I don’t feel that they are working as a team with the rest of us.

This is for Eddie Mondor,

I have seen a lot of your e-mail and some of it has a little religion mixed in with it, that is fine as a matter of fact it is refreshing to hear some times. But what I don’t like is to hear you suggest that all steady men go back to the hall, now don’t get me wrong I have some of those feelings myself but it is a personal decision for each member to make for themselves.

I don’t even know if there are steady men in other ports like we have here in San Francisco. I know that you don’t have 9.43 steady men, most other ports have section 14. If we had that here we would not have ANY steady men.

When we were fighting over that issue back in 69 we could not get any support from local 13 as far as a contract issue for the whole coast. Now you down there are so busy you somehow got around it and still do not have the problem with it.

Another question for Eddie:

At the last contract our walking bosses (91) wanted and tried to get language to try and have two walking bosses for every crane, a lashing boss & a dock boss. But as I hear it you in local 13 would not even discuss it. Now is that true on not? That is my question to you Eddie Mondor. I would love to hear from you.
