You go girl! That is almost my story in 1984, when I quit my job and became a full time casual. I took what ever job came my way also. I only heard a few, oh those casuals or IDs. But 99% were my great teachers on how to do the job with the least moves and as safely as possible!!
My favorite was working with the different gangs in the hold. Most of those gangs are long gone now, but not the memories of the many beautiful people I got to work with, or the BBQs or the close calls. I felt very lucky to get in, and I still thank my lucky stars every week even now, after all these years, that I belong to the wonderful family of the IWLU!!!!!!
After being a longshoreman and then going over to clerks, I can say, that by doing all the different jobs as a longshoreman, it sure made the clerking a breeze!
Get yourself a safety book and carry it with you all the time. This is your Bible! Also, be sure to read the contract. After all these years, I cant begin to know half of it. But when youre on the job there will always be someone who knows what you dont, and when in doubt, call your BA!!! Take care, have fun, and most of all be safe!!! Welcome to the wonderful unique world of the waterfront!!
