Public Meeting and Photographic Exhibition.
5th Sept 2003
7.30 - 9.00pm
Bankside House, Sumner St, London, SE1 (behind Tate Modern, nearest tube Southwark)
This event is to launch the 14th national Hazards Conference to be held in London, 5-7th Sept 2003.
To presume asbestos is an old problem that has gone away would be very wrong. The legacy of this killer industry will be with us for a long while to come, not just in the UK but globally. If the asbestos industry is allowed to continue to peddle its poison in countries that havent banned its use yet, then this problem will be with them for many generations to come. If the UK doesnt deal safely with the millions of tons left in our buildings we will never see an end to the problem.
In support of a global ban on asbestos, in support of asbestos disease victims and safer controls on asbestos in the built environment, a photographic exhibition will be held at the conference with contributions from South Africa, Japan, Scotland and England and Wales. Speakers will include Rie Ikeda from Kanagawa Occupational Safety and Health Center Japan, Nancy Tait of the Occupational and Environmental Diseases Association, Jimmy Cloughley from Clydebank Asbestos Group and a speaker from Action For Southern Africa (ACTSA). There will be ample opportunity to ask questions and look at the exhibits which will be on display at the meeting and for the whole of the conference in the LSE main entrance foyer from Saturday morning.
Everyone welcome.
