ESF Seminar: Where does anti-capitalism come from?
D'ou vient l'anti-capitalisme?
De donde viene l'anti-capitalismo?

9am - 12 noon, 13 November
European Social Forum
Ivry sur Seine, Cinema Quai d'Ivry, Balle 9

The Seattle movement has many roots. They include the ideas of the early utopian socialists and the radical co-operators, the Chartism of the 1830s and 1840s, the theories generated by socialist, environmental and anarchist thinkers, the mass strikes of the early twentieth century, the revolutionary moments of Russia in 1905 and 1917 and Barcelona in 1936, the two new lefts of the 1950s and 1960s, the women's liberation movements of the 1970s, as well as the organisations which remembered these inspirations in quieter times. The aim of this seminar is to celebrate and critically review some of these precursors and to ask how much a sense of history should inform the movement in its present form? Several of the speakers will take up the question of links between Paris in revolution, and the Russian revolutionary tradition.
