Please circulate: Meeting and commemoration for George Habash (1925 - 2008)TRIBUTE TO GEORGE HABASH - one of the most important Palestinian political leaders. George Habash, who passed away on Saturday, founded the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). George Habash and his family were forced in July 1948 to leave their native town Lydda, in what became one of the most infamous cases of deliberate mass expulsions of Palestinians by the Israeli army. Having fled to Beirut, Habash pursued his studies in pediatric medicine at the American University of Beirut. In 1952, he founded the Arab Nationalist Movement (ANM) with WADI HADDAD (a Palestinian), Ahmad al-Khatib (a Kuwaiti), and Hani al-Hindi (a Syrian). Habash played a key role in the creation of the PFLP following the 1967 six day war, and became its secretary-general. Throughout his life he was steadfast in opposing any Arab concession to Israel as long as Israel was not ready to reciprocate. He took an equally principled stance against Western support for Israel and the compliant conservative Arab regimes who he recognised had acted as enemies of the Palestinian people in their struggle for liberation. Come along to this event to hear about his life and struggle, and join the General Union of Palestinian Students in showing respect to the great leader Dr. George Habash. Sunday 3rd Feb. 08
