Solicitor Kate Maynard who works with Daniel Machover on the arrest warrant against the Israeli General Doron Almog will talk at our public meeting about the latest developments regarding the botched arrest of the Israeli General Almog for war crimes in Yibna, which hit the national headlines this week (such as Terror police feared gun battle with Israeli general - see below a list of this weeks articles in the national papers). IFY is delighted that Solicitor Maynard will be available, at this very short notice, to speak at our meeting next Wednesday, 27 February at 7pm. Kate Maynard, from Hickman & Rose solicitors, will join the panel of our public meeting at Islington Town Hall in Upper Street. Solicitor Maynard will talk about the Complaint to the IPCC (Independent Police Complaints Commission) and the IPCCs response which triggered this weeks headlines [if you wish to have the highly informative new document by Hickman & Rose and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights: IPCC reveals why Israeli war crimes suspect Doron Almog escaped arrest on 11 September 2005 we will be delighted to email it to you]. The arrest warrant against General Almog was for ordering the demolition of civilians homes in Yibna Refugee Camp, Rafah, by the Egyptian border, on 10 Jan 02. Solicitor Kate Maynard will talk about this arrest warrant as well as the plans to pursue the Complaint to the IPCC, especially issues arising from the revelations made by the British police, such as that the counter-terrorism command: DSU John MacBrayne took the considered opinion that, as access to the plane would not be consensual, there existed a real threat of an armed confrontation in Heathrow [if you wish to have the fascinating British police log report we will be delighted to email it to you]. Other speakers at the IFY meeting will be 2 Islington residents who dashed to Gaza, via the Sinai Desert, when the wall fell in Rafah a few weeks ago. Come and hear Solicitor Kate Maynard as well as David Shove [see www.thecnj.co.uk/islington/2008/021508/inews021508_07.html] and Yael Kahn to hear their eyewitness reports of their journeys to Yibna. Come and see images from Yibna, where the British photojournalist Tom Hurndall and TV cameraman James Miller, were shot dead by Israeli snipers. At the meeting well also be discussing our Friendship with Yibna and our plans in Islington to support the besieged Palestinians at this crucial cross road in their lives as refugees in Gaza under the continuous Israeli occupation, especially in the light of the recent statement made by Meir Sheetrit, the previous Israeli Mayor of Yavneh, which is the Israeli town built on the land of Yibna. Sheetrit is now the Israeli Minister of the Interior and at the last weekly Israeli Sunday cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, on 10 Feb 08, he is quoted as saying: We must take a neighbourhood in Gaza and wipe it off the map www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/952796.html. British media on police excuses regard the botched arrest of General Doron Almog:The Independent BBC: The Guardian The Times: Even though Almog was not arrested and Britain apologised to Israel and Almog(!) for the attempt to arrest Almog, other Israeli war criminals avoid coming to Britain for fear of arrest - see for examples: War crimes Israeli minister cancels UK trip Also see report by Israeli human rights group that says the overwhelming majority of Israeli troops suspected of criminal offences against Palestinians are never indicted: Israeli army crimes unpunished The meeting will be: 27 February at 7pm
