George Rishmawi of the Siraj Centre for Holy Land Studies, Co-founder of the International Solidarity Movement

Since 2004, the people of Bil’in, a small village in Occupied Palestine, have conducted a tenacious non-violent struggle against the Apartheid Wall that has devoured much of their agricultural land.. Palestinians and Israelis together conduct a weekly non-violent demonstration that attracts supporters from all over the world. The Israeli army has responded with violence and each week claims its victims.

At the meeting we will be asking other organisations to participate in our newly-forged link with Bil’in and in helping to consolidate that tie in the future

A short film about the campaign against the Wall will be screened.

Refreshments and a bookstall will be available before the meeting from 6:00 p. m.

Dear Colleague:

Liverpool Friends of Palestine and Merseyside Jews for Peace and Justice have initiated a friendship/support link with the village of Bil’in in Occupied Palestine The inaugural meeting will take place on Tuesday 22 April 2008 at the Friends Meeting House, School Lane, Liverpool. (See attached flyer).

Since 2004, the villagers of Bil’in between Jaffa and Jerusalem have conducted a tenacious, non-violent campaign against the Apartheid Wall that has consumed two-thirds of their agricultural land, and cuts them off from essential services such as employment, medical care and education. At the end of last year the Israeli High Court ordered the army to re-route the Wall in order to allow Bil’in to retrieve some of its land. A small, incomplete, victory, but in the present political climate in Israel-Palestine an important step forward. The army has yet to comply with the ruling.

This achievement did not happen in a vacuum, but is the result of a long and determined struggle. The Bil’in Committee Against the Wall organizes a weekly, non-violent demonstration every Friday after the mid-day prayers. Not only has the demonstration attracted supporters from all over the world, it has brought together Palestinians and Israelis who oppose the Wall and the Occupation in a unique moment of solidarity. The Israeli army handles these peaceful demonstrations with extreme violence and each week claims its victims, Palestinians, Israelis and Internationals. At the time of writing 10 people were injured at last Friday’s demonstration.

The LFoP-Bil’in Link is an important expression of our support for non-violent resistance as well as of our deep opposition to the Apartheid Wall. At the 22 April meeting, when Eyad Bornat, head of the Bil’in Committee will be present, we will discuss the ways in which that support can be given meaningful expression. This could take the form of solidarity visits, artistic and cultural exchanges, fundraising for needed equipment and, last but not least, spreading the word in order to generate effective international pressure. Eyad will be accompanied by Geroge Rashamwi, co-founder of the International Solidarity Movement.

We hope very much that you will not only join us on the 22nd but that your organization will become active with us in strengthening the Link and demonstrating solidarity with the beleaguered folk of Bil’in.

In solidarity, for peace with justice
