Cape: Open letter to Tony Blair
|
Rt. Hon Tony Blair MP
Dear Prime Minister RE: Asbestos Victimes - South AfricaWe write on behalf of the claimants affected by asbestos related disease, in Prieska, Marydale, Niekershoop and Buchuberg. We write this open letter in our capacities as authorised representatives of the above named communities and as chairpersons of the organisations below. Our communities have been decimated by activities of Cape Plc which undertook blue asbestos mining operations in our areas for many years. They operated the worlds largest mine at Koegas and a crushing mill at Prieska in the centre of the town opposite the school and church. Workers including young children were given no protection and asbestos dust was spread around the area from the mill and dumps. Thousands of people have died over the years and continue to do so. No compensation at all was paid by the British Company, Cape PLC which pulled out of South Africa leaving the legacy of asbestosis, death, environmental pollution and unemployment. Hon. Prime Minister we want your support so that justice can prevail. We appeal for your support for the victims and claimants seeking justice in Britain. Please assist us to achieve these goals. Our communities are entitled to compensation and need it desperately. Signed at Prieska on the 24 November 1999
