Audrey van Schalkwyk, community representative from the Northern
Cape SA who told the story of her family and its life and death in the
asbestos community. Her parents worked in the abysmally unsafe asbestos
mines and the kids used to go in and help when the mines needed extra
production.
Audreys parents developed asbestosis. Audrey said she got to
work in the TB hospital which was there because asbestos disease was
was treated as TB. She now works in the general hospital where nurses were
exposed to asbestos dust as injured asbestos workers came to be treated.
