The details here are taken from the harlow TUC site, see: http://www.bostockb.freeserve.co.uk/vauxhall.htm Public Meeting organised by Harlow TUC Friday 9 March Speakers:
British manufacturing industry is collapsing. In just one year, 106,000 people have been made redundant, whilst those who still have a job are working harder for less. Vauxhall’s Luton plant is now under threat. Closure would mean the loss of 2,000 jobs, and an estimated 20,000 further people could find themselves out of work as a result. However, the Transport and General Workers’ Union, the biggest union in Vauxhall, is committed to fighting the closure. Manufacturing is vital to a healthy economy. It creates jobs in transport, energy supply, catering, cleaning, commerce and communications. It provides customers for shops, financial services companies, estate agents and the service industries generally. And it creates the wealth necessary to sustain our health, education, welfare and other public services. Harlow has lost much of its manufacturing base. Recent job losses announced at Nortel show the trend continuing. Come and hear what we can do to halt and reverse this trend. This meeting will hear from Harlow’s MP Bill Rammell, the regions Euro MP Richard Howett, and from Steve Hart of the T&G on the need to protect manufacturing industry. Speakers from the Luton plant will also give an update on the campaign to save Vauxhall jobs.
