14TH NATIONAL HAZARD CONFERENCE
London School of Economics 5th to 7th September 2003
A new study shows that 3.4 million men, or 25% of the total work 49+ hours each week.
The new study lists the number and percentage of males working 49+hours per week in all 239 Local Authority Districts in the UK as well as showing numbers for standard regions of the UK and the different countries in the UK. This study will be discussed at the forthcoming 14th annual Hazards Conference to be held in London from 5th to 7th September to be attended by 500 Health and Safety experts.
The top ten areas of Britain with the highest percentages of men working long hours include some of the wealthy boroughs of London and the farming areas.
| Rank | Borough | Males working 49+ hrs pw | % |
| 1 | Kensington and Chelsea | 17,390 | 42.3 |
| 2 | City of London | 1,031 | 41.4 |
| 3 | Westminster | 18,138 | 37.1 |
| 4 | Aberdeenshire | 21,707 | 34.4 |
| 5 | Powys/Powys | 10,348 | 33.1 |
| 6 | Hammersmith and Fulham | 14,120 | 33.1 |
| 7 | Shetland Islands | 2,052 | 32.4 |
| 8 | Richmond upon Thames | 15,254 | 31.7 |
| 9 | Argyll & Bute | 7,187 | 31.4 |
| 10 | Orkney Islands | 1,609 | 31.2 |
The study is from the 2001 Census of Population and was processed for GMB London Region for the Hazards Conference by Nomis at the University of Durham and is attached. These are the first comprehensive statistics on those working more than 48 hours since the EU introduced a limit of 48 hours on the working week. The purpose was to safeguard the health of the working population and prevent risk to the community. Controversially large scale opt outs were permitted by the UK Government.
Mick Holder London Hazards Centre expert said
These new figures for each area of Britain show that one in four men are working long hours that are putting their health at risk and endangering the community. The issue affects men across the board from the high flyers and the low paid in rural areas. The Conference will discuss practical ways in which employers, trades unionists, policy makers and health professional can revisit the opt outs to get working hours down.
