Lawyers representing South Africans seeking compensation from British-based company Cape plc for asbestos-related illnesses will appear in Londons High Court on Thursday to discuss an out-of-court settlement with the company. Jane Cooper, spokeswoman for solicitors Leigh, Day & Co, said in a statement on Wednesday evening that the directions hearing - part of the case management system - before Justice Wright on Thursday could result in a settlement of the claim. Cape plc mined hazardous blue asbestos in the Northern Province and the Northern Cape in the 1970s. Leigh, Day & Co represent some 6000 claimants exposed to the hazardous substance. A total of 300 claimants have died since the case started in 1997. Of those, 150 have died since May this year. |
