To all trade unions around the world:

25 Jan 2006

Dear Friends,

I am writing to let you know that the Union of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company (Vahed) Workers have called for a strike from this Saturday, 28th Jan.

None of the bus workers’ demands has been met. The head of the union, Mansoor Ossanlou, is still in prison. The union’s activists are being constantly harassed. In December nearly 40 members of the union were arrested on separate occasions and detained from several hours to several days each time. Attempts have been made to frame them on trumped up charges.

The international solidarity shown so far by world labour organisations has made an important contribution to the workers’ struggle. However, understandably, one major problem of the workers in their continued protest is the lack of financial support. As you will be only too aware, financial backup is a decisive factor in any strike. The employees of Tehran Bus Company are too poor to be able to make any significant contribution to their strike fund. More importantly, the threats and pressures by the authorities are a serious barrier to the collection of funds.

I am appealing to you to make a contribution to the Tehran Bus Company Workers’ Union. Your financial support, together with your moral support, for the workers can be crucial for the success of the current protest.
