Labor Express Looks at Pacifica 'Radio War' - Sun. July 18 WLUW, 88.7 FM, 6:30 pm
Chicago
Most Chicago listeners may not know much about an onging battle in California's Bay Area. Pacifica National executives are turning Berkeley's KPFA, with its long history as an alternative radio station, into yet another corporate media outlet.
Last Tuesday, while KPFA host Dennis Bernstein was reporting on the tensions between the radio station and Pacifica, he was arrested...while on the air! Listeners and supporters streamed down to the radio station. Management got 50 cops to show up and 52 protesters were arrested, including other KPFA employees. The following day 1,000 protesters appeared at the station.
Clif Brown examines this deveping story on Labor Express this Sunday, July 18 (88.7 FM, 6:30 pm).
Features interview with Lynn Gerry, former union steward at Pacifica affiliate KPFK in Los Angeles, fired from that station for critizing Pacifica's corporatization and union busting. Also other segments related to the Pacifica story.
